There’s been no relief on the injury front for the Bombers after the bye, with a string of key players still unavailable.

A disastrous training session during their week off saw Darcy Parish, Kyle Langford and Mason Redman all land back on the injury list, while Zach Reid also suffered a setback with a hamstring issue just as he was set to return. McKay, Draper and Jones remain sidelined too, though Jordan Ridley and Sam Durham are up for selection.

The Bombers’ form leading into the bye was alarming. They were thumped by 41 points against Fremantle, then smashed by 95 against Geelong. It’s a worrying sign given their late-season fadeouts in the last two seasons, where they covered the line in just five of 16 games combined from Round 17 onwards in 2023 and 2024.

The Suns produced their best performance in a month last week, leading Melbourne by 46 points at the final change before easing off late. Their three previous losses came against much better opposition than Essendon, in GWS, Geelong and Fremantle.

Essendon dominated the early head-to-head record between these teams, covering in nine of the first 13. But Gold Coast have had the edge more recently, covering in the last two meetings, including a win at this venue last season.

With so many best-22 players still missing, the Dons are vulnerable. Back the Suns to take full advantage.

Noah Anderson has had 25+ in six straight when the Suns are favourites, while Jye Caldwell is enjoying more midfield minutes with Merrett at half-back. He’s had 25+ in five straight.

Jed Walter should take advantage of an undersized Dons backline and put at least one on the board.

Essendon typically don’t tag and the Suns skipper has racked up 35+ in three of his last five games, as well as in his most recent trip to Marvel.
