AFL Tips – Geelong v Carlton – Round 7 2024

The Cats host the Blues at the MCG in one of the more anticipated matches of the AFL season to date.

Best Bet

Carlton +4.5
Line

Geelong have not put a foot wrong in 2024 but are overrated in this market based on their favourable draw.

The Cats have beaten teams ranked 9th, 12th, 13th, 15th, 16th, and 18th. While their win over Brisbane was terrific, the torrential rain put the game squarely in their favour as the Cats are the AFL’s second-best wet weather team over the last decade, covering at 61%. The Lions are hardly the team of 2023 based on their effort against GWS on ANZAC Day either.

Carlton, meanwhile, are flying, winning five of six. The same question regarding the quality of their wins could have been levelled at them before their dismantling of the then-unbeaten Giants last week, but not anymore.

Concerns around the Blues’ reliance on Curnow and McKay to kick a score will be allayed by Tom Stewart’s absence, while both Jacob Weitering and Zac Williams are expected to play after suffering minor injuries last week.

The numbers look terrific for Carlton. They’ve covered the line in 10 straight against teams ranked above them on the ladder, their last six as underdogs and they’ve won seven straight at the MCG.

Up the ‘Baggers.

Same Game Multi

Carlton +4.5, C.Curnow 3+ Goals, S.Walsh 30+ Disposals, M.Holmes 20+ Disposals

Curnow bagged five against the Cats last time they met and will benefit from Stewart’s absence. He’s kicked 3+ in his last four games.

Sam Walsh has returned in awesome form. He’s racked up 30+ in each of his last four.

Max Holmes has had 20+ in each of his last eight.

Value Bet

Carlton 1-20
Margin

Aside from their win over North, each of Carlton’s last nine wins have come by fewer than 20 points. Geelong remain a well-drilled side and will be competitive, even in a defeat.
