Favourites are dropping like flies at Roland Garros, and we could see another favourite out of the race on the women’s side of the draw on Day 7.
Best Bet
The young American is simply playing the better tennis between the two.
Iva Jovic has an 8-4 record on clay this year with a serve plus return rating of 105.1, and although Osaka is 6-2 her rating is slightly lower at 103.7.
Jovic has had two very tough opponents to start this French Open, and she dismantled both Eala and Navarro, while Osaka was in more of a battle against Vekic in her second round match.
I think the 18-year-old can make a major statement in this.
Next Best
I don’t overly trust either player on clay, and their numbers are fairly similar – FAA is 6-4 with a serve plus return rating of 103.7, while Nakashima is actually slightly better with a 5-4 record and rating of 105.3.
FAA previously won their only meeting on hard court back in 2022, but it doesn’t add much weight to this contest on clay.
Both players are somewhat reliable on serve and play their fair share of tiebreaks, so assuming each player wins a set in this I likely will only require the one tiebreak to push this over – Nakashima a big chance to win as an underdog in this too.
Berrettini has been great, don’t get me wrong, but I do not trust the Italian’s body the longer and hotter this tournament continues.
Comesana is ranked outside the top 100, but he plays a heap of clay court tennis and thrives in these conditions. The Darderi win was a good win, despite the Italian having some physical concerns, but we could easily see something similar against Berrettini.
We’ve seen some wild upsets this French Open – don’t be surprised if the Argentine causes another in this.
Value Bet
We’ve seen Rybakina and Paolini fall early in this tournament, and this is a real dangerous third round for Coco Gauff.
Anastasia Potapova is currently playing the best tennis of her career, with a 15-3 clay court record this year with a serve plus return rating of 109.1 – which outperforms Gauff whose rating is 107.9 with a 10-3 record.
The Austrian does have a good record against Gauff – last time they met in their only clay meeting in 2023, she was victorious 6-2 6-3, and the meeting a month prior to this she also won on the hard courts of Miami. I think Potapova can cause a huge boilover here.
