The women’s draw has gone according to plan, with the top-four seeds featuring on Women’s Semi Finals Day at Flushing Meadows.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Jessica Pegula
I tipped Pegula for the tournament, but her performances against Fernandez and Navarro have been concerning and I’m not sure that form line is going to get her past Aryna Sabalenka.
Sabalenka leads the head-to-head 9-4, with Pegula winning their most recent meeting on grass in June, but the real trend has been how tight the matchups have been between the pair.
Their last four matches have gone to three sets, with five of their last six matches going over the total games. Even the straight sets have been tight – from their last five decided in straight sets, four have included a set going to seven.
I think Pegula at her best is more than capable of causing the upset – but she will need to improve dramatically from her Quarter Final with Navarro.
Coco Gauff vs Elena Rybakina
Another match that I’m taking the overs in, but the sample size between Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina is surprisingly small for two top players in the world.
The pair met in Canada in the lead-up, with Rybakina far too good in that Semi Final winning 5-7 6-2 6-2. It was the first time they had met in four years, which was also in Canada, with Gauff winning that in a third-set tie-breaker.
Unfortunately for Gauff, her record against the top-ten this year on all surfaces is quite poor. With a 4-5 record, and serve and return percentage of just 98.9, the lean would be that the new world number one Rybakina gets it done. But what else those nine matches that Gauff has played tells us, it will likely be going to three sets. Eight of the nine matches went the distance – eight of the nine matches over the total games.
