Sydney can continue their remarkable late season run here.

Freo were very good against Geelong last week but were unusually accurate in front of goal. Expected score had them kicking four fewer goals and winning by a single point.

The 106 points they conceded was the third time in their last five games they have given up triple figures, which suggests their defence is not holding up like it was earlier in the season.

They also relied on Luke Jackson going bananas, but that came against Mitch Edwards, who has been a punching bag for opposition ruckmen all season. Jackson had 20 ratings points last week, but he averages only 10.69 against Sydney, his worst return against any club based on the last five games against each.

The Swans have defied logic in their last two games since losing five of their key players to suspension, arguably playing better footy in the last fortnight than they have in months. There is a spirit and ferocity in this team right now that flies in the face of history or any statistical argument.

They have now won their last six games, five by more than six goals and four by 50 points or more. They are arguably the more in form team.

There is not much to take from the history between these teams, with Sydney edging the Dockers 6-4 head to head and against the line in the last 10. At the SCG, the Swans have won and covered in four of the last six.

They played once this season in a bizarre game at Optus, where Freo didn’t kick a goal in the first half before piling on 100 points in the second. It’s tough to take much from that one.

Callum Mills is obviously a big out for Sydney, but Justin McInerney was playing excellent footy early in the season and will be a very good inclusion. Brennan Cox and Brandon Walker could return to shore up a questionable Freo defence.

This is a bad spot for the Dockers, who have failed to cover the line in 10 of their last 11 as favourites outside of WA. With that in mind, back Sydney to remain right in this game.

Freo don’t really employ a shut down player, and Gulden has averaged 40.25 touches across his last four games.

Ollie Henry was the latest secondary forward to get hold of Freo last week, kicking a career high five snags. Logan McDonald is in serious form, kicking six last time out and two or more in six straight.

Andrew Brayshaw is coming off 24 touches last week and has had 30 or more in each of his four previous finals.

The Swans star has been in serious form over the last month, with his last four games reading 34, 41, 47 and 39 touches. On that basis alone both the 35 and the 40 have to be taken.

As mentioned, Freo’s defence outside of Alex Pearce is really battling lately, and it is the secondary medium and tall forwards who have done the damage. Since Round 22 the following players have kicked three against the Dockers: Laurie, Petty, Sharp, Ainsworth, Kemp, Evans, Neale and Henry. McDonald has kicked three or more in four of his last five and two in the other. Take the three and the four with confidence.

In the 2026 finals the quarter time margins have read 25, 27, 19, 16, 26 and six points. Teams are getting fast starts on the opposition, and both Sydney and Freo got off to hot starts in their last games. With emotion on their side, this a good price for the Swans to start hot yet again. Look to some larger margins if they are available too.
