AFL Premiership

Best Bets

GWS Giants
Premiership

Don’t forget just how close they were to derailing the Pies flag campaign last year. They really should have won the Preliminary and while we will never know, I reckon they would have beaten Brisbane too. The perfect blend of youth and experience.

Brisbane Lions
Premiership

Will only lose one or two games at home so only have to win about half their remaining games for a top two spot and a Gabba run in September. Get stronger with Ashcroft and Doedee. Ready to win it.

Lay

Collingwood
Premiership

Won last year’s flag with a combination of tactics and intensity. If either of those factors come back to the pack, they can fall away markedly.

Top 8

Best Bet

St Kilda
Top 8

St Kilda might not have as much raw talent but they are a well drilled and disciplined team, as Ross Lyon’s sides so often are. He will get the absolute most out of them.

Lay

Essendon
Miss Top 8

They are s short price to miss but $1.24 is still exceptional value. They were atrocious last year and there is very little reason to think anything will improve.

Wooden Spoon

Best Bet

West Coast
Fewest Wins

The Eagles were somehow shorter than North for this last week but have since shortened. Still exceptional value with essentially the same list that was arguably the worst non-expansion team since Fitzroy’s last season last year.

Value Bet

Hawthorn
Fewest Wins

Have been dealt a brutal draw for where they finished in 2023 with Adelaide, Collingwood, Geelong, GWS, North and Richmond as their double ups. Their ordinary key defensive stocks have been smashed by injury already. Like what Mitchell is building but could be a down year.

Brownlow Medal

Best Bets

Errol Gulden
Brownlow Medal

Gulden came home like a train in last year’s count, polling in nine of the last ten games to finish equal fourth. A clear standout in the Swans midfield, he clearly catches the umpires eye.

Lachie Neale
Brownlow Medal

Should be a three-time winner after Cripps’ dodgy non-suspension in 2022 and then had his second-worst season statistically since 2017 last year and still won it. Plays in a team that will win 16+ games and the umpires don’t give votes to any of his teammates. Overs.

Coleman Medal

Best Bet

Charlie Curnow
Coleman Medal

Probably becomes the first to win a hat trick of Colemans since Gary Ablett Sr. The Blues lack other scoring options, especially if McKay’s kicking woes continue, so Charlie will again be targeted to a ridiculous degree.

Value Bets

Jesse Hogan
Coleman Medal

A fit, focused Hogan is as good as any tall forward in the league. His best football should be in front of him and he looms as the focal point in what should be a very good team.

Jacob van Rooyen
Coleman Medal

‘Roo’ is sure to be the focal point of the Demons attack and showed a lot of promise in his second year, but is still open to huge improvement. Cricket score odds and certainly worth a ticket.

Rising Star

Best Bets

Riley Sanders
Rising Star

Has shortened in betting significantly but still the top pick. A ready made gun who has been a starting midfielder all summer for the Dogs as Macrae is shuffled out. Had 30 in his last praccy. Ready to go.

Colby McKercher
Rising Star

North are using McKercher in the same half-back role which has seen Sheezel and Daicos take out this award in the last two seasons. Already a key part of North’s dynamic ball movement.

Lay

Harley Reid
Rising Star

Looks a slower burn than the other top picks (think Cam Rayner) and will play in a horrible football team. Will show plenty but won’t have the output of some of his rivals.
