Entering Round 5, this NBL season is in full swing and surprisingly its Tasmania that sit atop the ladder, for the first time ever. This might be one of the most competitive seasons of NBL we have ever seen.
Brisbane Bullets Vs. SEM Phoenix (Thurs 7:30pm)
Best Bet
Things have looked easier for Mays since the return of Nathan Sobey to the Phoenix lineup.
Early days it looked like the former Los Angeles Laker was struggling to adapt to the NBL and his production was below what we expected. We have managed to get a good look at the Phoenix now, with six games played, being the second most. Unfortunately, they have started the season slowly, with just two wins.
Mays is averaging 5APG this season, with that number boosted to 6APG for the month of October. Realistically, between Sobey, Glover and now D’Shawn Schwartz finding his groove, Mays should be able to play facilitator and find five dimes.
Syndey Kings @ New Zealand Breakers (Wed 7:30pm)
Next Best
Cooks has gone under the radar for Sydney and is giving them the spark they need to win games.
A former MVP of the league, Cooks has definitely taken a hit to his role within the Kings team, but it’s helping them string wins together. He is averaging 15PPG so far this season and with the way the fixturing has run, Sydney has only been seen four times.
They are about to play a bunch of double header rounds coming up and I think we see them reaffirm their status as the team to beat. Cooks will have Mennenga and American import Charles Bediako to contend with, but New Zealand may struggle without PJC who remains sidelined.
Tasmania JackJumpers Vs. Adelaide 36ers (Fri 7:30pm)
Value Bet
Oh boy! The Jackies are balling and have held top spot surprisingly for the first time in the club’s history. This is despite winning the 2023-24 NBL title.
Tasmania have started this year with a stunning balance of defence and offence. Magnay and Bannan are controlling the D, while Armstrong and David Johnson are proving to be a dynamic duo.
After returning from a stint with Golden State, Armstrong is showcasing a strong basketball IQ and ability to score under duress. He is averaging five three-point attempts per game, with that number now at six attempts over his last four games.
The 36ers probably use Bryce Cotton to defend Armstrong, who will match him for pace, but at just 6’0” tall, Armstrong could take advantage via uncontested threes.
