With the NBA season about to begin, we take a look at some potential Championship winners and possible MVP player award winners.
Championship predictions
Winner: San Antonio Spurs
The runner up for the 2025/26 season, the San Antonio Spurs have made the slight adjustments they think they need to win it all in 2026/27.
Adding Tobias Harris will be a solid addition, adding veteran presence without sacrificing a roster spot. Harris averaged 13 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists across 63 games for Detroit. He brings a wealth of knowledge with 15 years in the league and is still good enough for Coach Johnson to deploy in multiple positions.
Off the floor they lost Sean Sweeney, who will now coach against them at Orlando. His departure has opened the door for the monumental signing of Billy Donovan, who brings a wealth of knowledge to support Johnson in this seasonβs title run.
With 62 wins and the second seed in the competitive Western Conference, not much had to change for the Spurs. Although they may have problems with picking their starting lineup each night, itβs a good problem to have.
They deserve joint favouritism heading into this season and barring injury, will be there at the pointy end.
Value: Detroit Pistons
The Pistons feel like they are being slept on by the media and I tend to agree. A 60-win season and the number one seed in the East was quickly forgotten, after they crashed out in the playoffs at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
It went down to the last minute but eventually they got the signature of Jalen Duren and have built around him and superstar, Cade Cunningham. Tobias Harris, Isaiah Stewart and Caris LeVert are out, but the replacements of John Collins, Isaiah Joe and Taurean Prince seem like for like. Duncan Robinson and Joe should provide the stretch outside shooting that we saw become their Achillies heel during the playoffs.
Cade Cunningham is a year older and heading into the prime of his career. His trajectory has stayed on track in his first five years, and the 2-time All-Star would not be accepting of anything less than making that a 3-time.
The key pieces are all still here, hopefully now everyone has bought in. The Eastern Conference did get a little stronger, but the Pistons would be looking to go one better than last season and qualify for an Eastern Conference Final as the pass mark.
Most Valuable Player Award
Winner: Victor Wembanyama
Victor the inflictor has lived up to the hype from his draft year. The former #1 pick is as advertised and causing havoc amongst the NBA.
Wemby won the Defensive Player of the Year award after receiving all 100 first place votes, making him the first unanimous winner of the award ever. It also made him the youngest winner of the award at just 22 years of age. His defensive prowess is second to none, and you can see opposition players making decisions based on his whereabouts on the floor.
Offensively, Wembanyama is putting it together. He attempted less shots last season than the year previous but has become more efficient. His decision making has clearly improved and with his skillset, there are more options available to him, than any other player.
In contention to win the MVP in 2025/26, he finished third behind Jokic and winner Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. He averaged 25 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 blocks and all those numbers could improve as he heads into his fourth season.
Value: Giannis Antetokounmpo
Giannis finally found his way out of Milwaukee and the 31-year-old still has plenty left to give, now in Florida.
After thirteen seasons as a Buck, it’s going to be surprising to see Giannis in the Miami uniform. A two-time MVP, finals MVP and championship winner, the people of Milwaukee would not be holding a grudge, as their superstar looks to expand his resume while they begin more of a rebuild phase.
Giannis played just 36 games in 25/26 with a multitude of niggles and injuries that derailed his season. Whilst this could be a sign of the times, the preseason form for the Miami Heat suggests he just had an unlucky run and is fit and firing this season.
I can see a world where Giannis and Bam Adebayo become a formidable duo, helping the Heat have a winning season. A fresh start and a new city to conquer might be just what the Greek Freak needs to find MVP calibre form once more.
