The Detroit Lions are very much in the Super Bowl picture this year but the rebuilding New Orleans Saints set up as one of the best bets of Week 1 getting a sizable handicap.

Detroit were completely gutted by injuries on the defensive side of the ball last season but still managed a winning season so one would think they should be a serious Super Bowl contender this year. That does not mean they will get off to a flyer though and there is a very reliable angle to play against them.

Favourites of six or more who didn’t make the playoffs the year prior weeks 1-4 are 4-12 against the spread.

Underdogs of at try or more who missed the playoffs in the opening two weeks are 36-20 against the spread since 2021 while Week 1 underdogs of 6.5 or more are 53-30 ATS.

With Tyler Shough 7-2 against the number as a starter, confidence is high New Orleans can keep this close.

Jameson Williams has established himself as a reliable receiver capable of bringing in plenty of targets after starting his career as very much a burner rarely used underneath. He topped 100 yards in four games last season and hit 65-plus in six more. Williams finished last season with eight or more targets in five of his last six so has really built that trust with Jared Goff.
