England vs Norway Preview
England have matched their pre-tournament expectation, with another quarter final birth. They have been blessed by the draw and going off FIFA rankings alone, they have the easiest opponent to advance to a semi-final.
Calling Norway an easy opponent is obviously an understatement, with this current Norwegian squad taking this nation to its deepest World Cup run in its history. Led by Erling Haaland the Norwegians are on a dream run. They have scored five knockout stage goals in their history and Haaland has 60% of them.
Best Bet
Thomas Tuchel’s men should prove too strong for the Vikings of Norway and one way or another, I see them as the team to advance.
We saw a tendency from some nations to go ultra defensive throughout the round of 16 and it was to their detriment. The attacking squads have been rewarded once they score, with the opposition then forced to open up and play risky football to try and level.
These two nations play attacking brands of football, and both have the same question mark hanging over their campaign: can the defence hold up against the world’s best?
Same Game Multi Bet
I expect this to be a showpiece from the get-go, with both teams eager to get scoreboard pressure early.
England have multiple avenues to goal with Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham as the most prominent. Norway is heavily led by Haaland and may need the likes of Nusa or Ostigard to bob up.
England surprisingly only have the three goal scorers for the tournament, with Nico O’Reilly coming agonisingly close, without success. England’s form suggests they are susceptible to getting scored against, even with renowned goalkeeper Jordan Pickford controlling at the back. Norway have not managed a clean sheet since a draw with Switzerland back in April.
Value Bet
Fireworks to kick things off, this game is expected to be high scoring, and I don’t see either team wasting time with the usual feeling out we see from some nations.
England have six first half goals this World Cup, Norway adds five. Both squads have games with multiple first half goals, also with the Three Lions putting a first half brace on both Croatia and Mexico.
Neither team has been rock solid defensively, with England ranked 19th for goals conceded and Norway a dismal 38th overall. England will be doing everything they can stop to Haaland taking over, but so did everyone else in their wake.
