Australia surprised the football world with a 2-0 victory over Turkiye. Since that game, it has been a fall back to earth with a 2-0 loss to the USA and the 0-0 draw with Paraguay. It was enough to retain second spot in the group and if you had of offered that at the start of the World Cup, we would have taken it.

Egypt only scored 1 more goal than Australia through the group stage and without offending our cross Tasman friends, they had the easiest team in either group. Both teams would have been encouraged after seeing their knockout stage opponent, which goes to show the evenness of this match.

Egypt has the best striker on the field, with questions remaining over Mo Salah’s fitness for this match. He should give Australia plenty of headaches and he has the ability to take this game over.

Australia really haven’t shown anything since they hyped us up in the opener, tied for 33^rd overall on goals scored. Five shots on goal against Paraguay and only two against the USA does not fill me with much optimism, that we can create enough chances versus Egypt.

Volpato has looked lively for Australia since getting brought in late against the USA. He clearly has the talent for international football, and I think we missed an opportunity to play him more this World Cup.

He was subbed in against USA, then against Paraguay again he was substituted, this time getting taken out at the 58^th minute. He had plenty of the ball and created movement in the defence, which at times was allowed to stagnate behind the ball. He managed one shot on goal in that game but always looked lively.

The Australian made the choice to represent Australia over Italy just before the World Cup. He was born in Australia but after not being selected for representative teams in Sydney, he and his family moved to Italy to further his footballing career, what now looks like a justified move.

I’m expecting a close game and both teams to be heavily cautious in defence. Australia have been excellent so far and without counting an own goal, have only been scored against once.

Egypt has four clean sheets in their last eight matches, with their experienced defence not offering much to opposition. The 0-0 draw is paying $7.00 on its own if you want to go all in, but the added luxury with some bookmakers for a correct score combination seems great value.
