The number one FIFA ranked nation in April 2026, but since then they have fallen out to third. The top three are very close and single game results can affect their current position.

Unfortunately for France there is no easing into this World Cup, with Senegal presenting as a tough first opponent.

All the expectations are that France will win this game, the other games and qualify top of Group I. I don’t think it’s that easy.

It’s one of the toughest groups and if France underestimate any of these teams, it could cost them top spot of the group stage.

However, on paper they are the most talented team, with names like Dembele, Olise and oh yeah, a little-known player named Kylian Mbappe. The depth is exceptional from front to back, it’s just going to be about executing on game day.

Unless we see an early goal from France, I expect this game to run to script. That being, Senegal to be rock solid in defence and France to become frustrated with the process, for no result.

If the game is in the balance in the second half, we should see both teams open up and go for the win. Senegal has the firepower to contend here, but France have the world class personnel.

Recent form for Senegal hardly fills with me confidence, as I would have loved to see a win against Saudi Arabia in the lead up. America getting three past them probably hurt more before Team USA’s opener, where they made legitimate claims.
