UFC 318: Holloway vs. Poirier Main Card Picks
Max Holloway vs. Dustin Poirier
Most of the money has come for Holloway return to the BMF title, and although it’s not a proper fight, it could be one of the most exciting fights this year.
Poirier won’t be easy to beat because it’s his last fight in the UFC. That could see him give everything he has, but he’s also cautious of not wanting to get knocked out and risk another concussion. That could work against him, and with Holloway still seeking a chance at the lightweight belt, he has more to gain from winning.
Punters get $1.72 for Holloway, and punters know what they’ll get from him. He’ll be a workhorse, and we’re picking him to win in our UFC 318 picks.
Paolo Costa vs. Roman Kopylov
Paulo Costa is a tough fighter to follow in the UFC. He has been likened to a balloon animal, and he could struggle to contain Roman Kopylov, who is the more technical fighter.
With any knockout fighter, if Costa lands a big punch the fight could be over. However, Kopylov is good at keeping his distance, and when he works into the clinch, he could give Costa his fifth career loss as an MMA fighter.
We’re not surprised to see Kopylov at $1.40 to win. He has more upside than Costa at this stage of their careers, so include him in UFC 318 multis.
Kevin Holland vs. Daniel Rodriguez
We love backing Kevin Holland on PPV cards, and unfortunately, we must take $1.22 odds. However, there is better value in backing Holland by submission at $3.60, and that’s what we’re going for.
Rodriguez is fighting well enough to be put on the main card, but Holland went to another level when submitting Vicente Luque, and he has numerous wins by submission his record, so Rodriguez could be another.
The $1.22 odds are worth including in multis, but the $3.60 for a sub win are tough to overlook.
Dan Ige vs. Patricio Pitbull
Dan Ige is a consummate professional and the worthy favourite against Patrico Pitbull, who has eight losses on his record.
Ige might have nine losses on his 19-9 record, but the American has faced harder opponents, and he never shies away from stepping up to the plate when needed. This is a dangerous fight for him, but he’s smart enough to navigate an aggressive fighter.
Punters get $1.50 for Ige to post his 20th MMA win, and after knocking out Sean Woodson at UFC 314, he looks ready to produce another headline win on Sunday.
Michael Johnson vs. Daniel Zellhuber
We are big fans of Daniel Zellhuber, who is much better than what he showed in his most recent loss last year to Esteban Ribovics.
He lacked a bit of ringcraft in that fight, but with time under his belt, the 26-year-old Mexican should come back stronger with a big win over Michael Johnson, who is a good fight for Zellhuber. Johnson is 24-19, so he’s used to losing.
We can’t see Johnson surviving three rounds if Zellhuber is at his best, so we’re taking Zellhuber by KO at $2.75 as a value bet. He’s strong enough to put Johnson on his back with one punch and get back into lightweight contention.
