Will we see Novak Djokovic turn back the clock on Men’s Semi Finals Day, with this being the Serbian’s last realistic chance of another Wimbledon crown.
Jannik Sinner vs Novak Djokovic
Sinner’s elbow, Djokovic’s body – there’s so many question marks surrounding both players, it’s hard to know what is going to play out physically especially in the 31-degree London sun.
I understand Shelton is a quality player, but despite having the monster serve he’s never been great on grass courts, and winning just 16 return points from a possible 86 against the Italian in their Quarter Final emphasises why this was a perfect match-up for Sinner under duress.
He won’t get that against Djokovic though. Of the four players remaining in the men’s draw, Djokovic has the highest return points won percentage at 45.8% this Wimbledon – the tournament average being 39.8%.
Although Djokovic doesn’t exactly have a clean slate in this area, we did see Sinner’s struggles in hot conditions at this year’s Australian Open. Between that and the elbow injury, I would have to lean towards Djokovic’s game handicap even if the Serbian doesn’t come away with the win.
Taylor Fritz vs Carlos Alcaraz
I think the American has played the better tennis this Wimbledon, so I’d be shocked if Alcaraz won this in straight sets.
Fritz’s serve and return point percentage this tournament is 112%, while Alcaraz is just at 108.9% – this is with every match the American has played this tournament being against top-45 opposition. Alcaraz on the other-hand has played just one player inside the top-60.
The issue for Fritz will be his performance against the upper echelon across his career – he hasn’t won a set against Alcaraz in their two career meetings, he failed to win a set against Sinner in their three meetings last year, and is 0-10 against Djokovic across his career.
Alcaraz gets it done, but I expect the American to take a set and force this contest to either four or five.
