Elena Rybakina v Simona Halep
A slow start in her Quarter Final with Ajla Tomljanovic, but Elena Rybakina was dominant from the second set onwards and appears overs against Simona Halep.
The Romanian was once again ultra-impressive against Amanda Anisimova which we predicted, but Halep has had more trouble against Rybakina across their career. She leads their head-to-head 2-1, with their last two matches going to three sets won by Halep.
The Kazakh’s serve is crucial in this against the defensive game of Halep – Rybakina won 76% of points on her first serve against Tomljanovic, and when on-song it goes a long way to her causing a big upset this Semi Final. She should be able to cover the +4.5 game handicap in this.
Ons Jabeur v Tatjana Maria
Don’t think anyone expected Ons Jabeur’s Semi Final opponent to be German Tatjana Maria ranked 103 in the world, but here we are.
A bit of a Quarter Final scare against Marie Bouzkova which was a difficult match-up for the Tunisian, but after dropping the first set she had zero issues going 6-1 6-1 to close. Her versatility with power, slice and net play makes this an incredibly difficult proposition for Maria, who has relied on her defensive play and slice, which has worked against the pure power players of Ostapenko and Niemeier, but not this time.
These two have met on three occasions across their career with Jabeur leading 2-1, but the last time they played was 2018 where Jabeur was ranked 116 in the world and Maria 77 – despite this, the Tunisian won 6-4 6-1. Things are very different to four years ago though, and Jabeur should finish this off in under an hour.
