We enter the second-round of the US Open, and is there a top-10 seed in danger against an in-form countrywoman?

Darderi is certainly more established on clay, but the Italian has been in great form since reaching the third round of Wimbledon, including wins at Bastad and Umag.
The Italian destroyed Australian Rinky Hijikata, and will now face American Eliot Spizzirri.
Spizzirri beat another American in the first-round in world 389 Stefan Dostanic, and despite being ranked 127 in the world the American has never beaten a player inside the top-100 from seven attempts across his career.
Seeing what Darderi did to the more established Hijikata, I think he’ll continue to ride his form to an easy win in this one.

Understand it was a controversial five-setter for Bonzi, but I’m still surprised to see the Frenchman underdog in this.
Bonzi is in great form – he’s now beaten Medvedev twice this year, plus Arnaldi, Tsitsipas and Musetti in the lead-in. As for his second round opponent Marcos Giron, his match also went the distance against clay-courter Mariano Navone, and has been in horrible touch.
The American is 8-15 since March, including 1-5 on hard courts. Understand it’s his home slam, but think the Frenchman should enter this as favourite.
The Argentine has performed well on hard courts recently, including a Round of 16 run at Cincinnati, and now the scalp of the 32nd ranked American Alex Michelsen.
He faces veteran Cam Norrie who advanced past Korda in the first-round – the American retiring after two sets due to injury, requiring to serve-volley most of the match to shorten points.
Norrie has struggled on hard courts all year, so I don’t think this will be regulation for him against someone of Comesana’s ability.
Both Fonseca and Machac enter this second-round off the back of straight set wins, and it was much needed for the Czech who has been in a horrible run of form leading into Roland Garros.
Machac was 4-8 since April leading into the US Open, and had lost his last three matches prior to Round 1.
The quality of Fonseca’s first round win over Kecmanovic was substantially better than the Czech’s who was dominant in his win but it was against the 86th ranked clay courter Luca Nardi. I think Fonseca gets it done here.
Winning form is good form, and that’s exactly what Frenchwoman Elsa Jacquemot has been doing starting with her run at Wimbledon.
Jacquemot is now 14-5 from The Championships onwards, including a Quarter Final run at Cleveland in the lead-up and now a quality first-round scalp over top-50 opposition Marie Bouzkova.
Leylah Fernandez has been playing well, winning Washington in the lead-up, but outside of that her year has been underwhelming. I think Jacquemot can take it to the Canadian based on recent form, and cover the game handicap.

An All-American second-round, and I’m favouring the underdog Caty McNally in this. Although ranked just outside the top-100, she’s been flying heading into the US Open winning both Newport and Evansville challenges.
Emma Navarro has been right up there in the rankings for a couple of years now, her form this year has been poor with a 26-21 record and winning just two of her last seven matches.
Her first-round win was less than convincing against the 170th ranked Yafan Wang, and I think McNally will come out aggressive in this and challenge the world number 11.
