We enter the second-round of the French Open as the country endures a record-breaking heatwave – will that affect some of the big names?
Best Bet
I think we’re getting this price purely due to the fact Miomir Kecmanovic won the challenger event leading into Roland Garros – the Serbian did beat some hardened clay courters on his way to victory, but these conditions probably won’t help the Serbian.
On the ATP Tour, Borges’ numbers on clay are nearly identical to that of Kecmanovic. The Portuguese had a great win in his opening round against clay-courter Etcheverry, while Kecmanovic beat Marozsan, who is no slouch but probably plays his best tennis on hard courts.
I think Borges will adjust better to Paris’ heatwave we’re seeing at the moment, and really expected the Portuguese to enter this even money.
Next Best
Basavareddy caused the first-round upset over Taylor Fritz which we steered you into, and I think he’s well suited to these conditions against another American in Alex Michelsen.
With a 13-5 clay record this year predominantly made up of challengers, Basavareddy has played plenty of tennis on the surface and is well equipped – while clay is far from Michelsen’s surface of choice with a 5-6 record on the year.
Basavareddy beat Michelsen in Auckland early 2025 showing he’s capable – think we’ll see this one go to either four sets with at least one tiebreak, or goes the distance.
Marie Bouzkova has put together a nice clay court season so far with an 8-3 record. The Czech won Bogota in the lead-up, and was dominant against the dangerous Bronzetti in the first-round.
Her second-round will be against Englishwoman Francesca Jones, who is 10-11 on the year with a lot of her tennis on the challenger circuit, with a 1-3 record against top-100 opposition.
Jones did beat Haddad Maia in the first-round – but the Brazilian is 4-16 in 2026. I think this will be a huge wake up call against someone of the quality of Bouzkova.
Low-key, Marta Kostyuk could make a case as the most in-form woman in tennis this year.
The Ukrainian is 19-4 this year, including 12-0 on clay – three of her four losses at the hands of either Rybakina or Sabalenka.
Kostyuk covered the game handicap in her first-round match, and should do so again in her second-round against Volynets. The American is 1-5 against top-50 opposition this year, and none of those players are close to the level we’re seeing from Kostyuk.
Value Bet
We tipped you into Teichmann in her first-round match against Samsonova, and I think the Swiss can win again as underdog against Madgelina Frech.
Frech is 2-4 on clay this year including her opponent retiring in the first-round, and hasn’t shown incredible signs on the surface since 2024.
Teichmann is a proven clay courter over her career and appears to be back playing some of her best tennis since her injury lay-off. Last time they met it was Frech winning 6-4 4-6 7-5 on grass in 2023 – Teichmann should respond on the clay here.
