Tennis Tips – French Open Day 1 Tips

The first round of Roland Garros kicks off tonight and there looks to be plenty of value across both cards. Outright predictions for both draws are available here.

Best Bet

Petra Martic -4.0
Line - Katerina Siniakova vs Petra Martic

Petra Martic is a former quarterfinalist at Roland Garros and strikes an extremely winnable first round matchup against Katerina Siniakova here. Martic is coming off solid performances at both key lead in events in Rome and Madrid where she knocked off World No. 5 Anett Kontaveit. Siniakova has won just 12 games on clay this season and has struggled with injury in recent times.

Next Best

Jenson Brooksby -4.0
Line - Pablo Cuevas vs Jenson Brooksby

Pablo Cuevas knows his way around the clay but young American Jenson Brooksby should overwhelm the 35-year-old on Sunday. Brooksby ranks 11th on tour this season for return points won percentage and he should constantly find his way into the service games of his Argentinian opponent. The form of the American is far superior to that of Cuevas and the conditions should allow him to dominate this clash.

Over 37.5 Games
Total Games - Fabio Fognini vs Alexei Popyrin

The total looks to have come up too low here in a match that features two players that are no stranger to going the distance. Fognini still has the game to win this comfortably but a much more likely outcome is that he needs at least four sets before it’s all said and done. Popyrin is coming off the best week of his season to date with a Challenger title in Bordeaux and he will be confident that he can serve his way to victory here. No surprise if this goes the distance.

Sebastian Ofner +8.5
Game Handicap - Alexander Zverev vs Sebastian Ofner

Sebastian Ofner came through qualifying in impressive fashion and while Zverev is in strong form himself, the game handicap looks too good to refuse at such a large number. The forecast conditions should give Ofner every chance to make this a contest and I wouldn’t be at all shocked if he manages to snatch a set.

Value Bet

Sloane Stephens
Head to Head - Sloane Stephens vs Julia Niemeier

Sloane Stephens has struggled for consistency all season and her form on clay is far from inspiring. This is still a Grand Slam champion though and the American has had success in Paris in the past. The conditions should suit and the value is good enough for me to make this a play. Her opponent, Niemeier, came through a kind qualifying draw and whether she can match it with a proven commodity at this level remains to be seen.
