Aryna Sabalenka vs Elina Svitolina
I do think Aryna Sabalenka gets through to another Australian Open Final, but it won’t be straight forward against the experienced Elina Svitolina.
Sabalenka leads the head-to-head 5-1, but three of their six matches have gone to three sets, with four of the six going over 20.5 games – the other two landing on 20.
The big question mark is Sabalenka’s form in Semi Finals at majors – her record is 7-6, and 12 of those 13 matches have gone over the total games line. Although Svitolina has struggled in the three major Semi Finals she’s played in across her career, it looks like the 31-year-old’s mentality has shifted playing with nothing to lose.
Jessica Pegula vs Elena Rybakina
Since re-connecting with former coach Stefano Vukov in September, the Kazakh has gone on an absolute tear.
Elena Ryabkina is now 18-1 from her last 19 matches – the most impressive part is that it includes the WTA Finals, so eight of those 18 wins have been against top-10 opposition.
In those eight wins, Rybakina covered the game handicap in nine of those – the tricky part being, the only opponent she failed to do so against was Jessica Pegula.
With the handicap slightly shorter this time around due to how well the American is playing, I’m happy to take Rybakina at the -2.5 though. Can’t say anything bad about what Pegula has done this tournament at all – but both Madison Keys and Amanda Anisimova produced a huge number of unforced errors, the latter had 44 in the Quarter Final, and the way Rybakina is playing I just don’t think she’ll give the American this many free points.
