There were a few cracks in Sabalenka’s Semi Final win over Navarro, failing to serve out the match in the second set with the American forcing a tiebreak.
Jessica Pegula started slowly but showed enormous resilience coming from a set and a break down to drag momentum on her terms.
Pegula has more weapons than Navarro, especially the serve, which could trouble Sabalenka. The Belarussian owns a 5-2 career record over Pegula, but on hard court it’s two-apiece.
Sabalenka won the Final at Cincinnati a few weeks back, but all four of their hard court matches have been tight with 21, 19, 21 and 25 games.
We saw what the American crowd did in last year’s US Open when Gauff beat Sabalenka as an underdog, and although Pegula may not have enough to beat Sabalenka for her first career title, she’s certainly got enough weapons and craft from the back-court to ensure it’s not all on the Belarussian’s terms.
