Tennis Tips – Australian Open Day 2 Tips

Pegula - Tennis Betting Tips

It will be a tough initiation for an Australian teenager when she comes up against last year’s US Open Finalist in the first round. See our outright Australian Open betting previews here.

Best Bet

Under 19.5
Total Games - Maya Joint vs Jessica Pegula

Australia is hoping that Maya Joint is the next big Australian prospect coming through the ranks, but the 18-year-old has one of the more difficult challenges in tennis this Australian Open.

Jessica Pegula enters this Australian Open off the back of reaching the Final in Adelaide, and will be keen to set the tone early this tournament in a tough quarter of the draw.

Joint lost to Keys 6-4 6-0 at last year’s US Open – a similar score wouldn’t surprise me here.

Next Best

Felix Auger Aliassime -3.5
Line - Jan-Lennard Struff vs Felix Auger Aliassime

Has he figured it out? I’m not sure yet but I’m happy to take the price and line to find out.

FAA enters the Australia Open off the back of winning in Adelaide which included the scalps of Paul and Korda.

He faces danger man, German Jan-Lennard Struff but his form on hard courts has been ordinary the last year, going 9-14 which includes 3-7 against top-30 opposition. Struff is much better suited to grass and clay, so happy to take FAA at the line.

Rebecca Sramkova +1.5
Line - Rebecca Sramkova vs Katie Volynets

Bit of a journeywoman, moving inside the top-50 for the first time aged 28. Sramkova went 32-14 on hard court over the last 52 weeks, including a 12-6 record against top-100 opposition.

Beat Collins and Boulter in the Billy Jean King Cup Finals at the end of last year, and has proven she’s more than capable.

Volynets has also moved to a career best ranking of 59, but her form line is nowhere near as good going 8-11 on hard court since July last year and just 1-3 against top-50 opposition.

Nishesh Basavareddy +8.5
Line - Nishesh Basavareddy vs Novak Djokovic

This won’t be regulation for Novak Djokovic. He was challenged early at last year’s Australian Open by Prizmic and Popyrin, and the 19-year-old Basavareddy enters in nice form.

The talented American featured in the Next Gen Finals last year, and in the lead-up reached the Semi Final at Auckland with five top-100 scalps – two of those players inside the top-50 in Michelsen and Tabilo.

Probably doesn’t beat Novak who eventually figures it out, but certainly does enough to scare and cover.

Dayana Yastremska -4.5
Line - Mayar Sherif vs Dayana Yastremska

Revived her career at last year’s Australian Open with a Semi Final run and now has plenty of points to defend with the rest of her 2024 quite poor.

But in Yastremska’s favour is her first-round opponent, Mayar Sherif. The Egyptian is ranked 65 in the world, but purely based off her clay court efforts.

Dating back to the 2023 US Open, Sherif has lost her last 10 matches on hard courts. Too much on the line for Yastremska here, and I can’t see the Egyptian turning the tables on her hard court form.

Value Bet

Jelena Ostapenko
Match - Belinda Bencic vs Jelena Ostapenko

I get why she’s the underdog, but perhaps bookmakers and bettors have got carried away with the Belinda Bencic form.

The Swiss missed nearly all of last year with her return against quality opposition being this lead-up. She played some good tennis in Adelaide, but nothing to suggest she should open here at $1.51.

Ostapenko is highly unpredictable, which works as an underdog as her best is capable of beating anyone. The Latvian has been terrible since Wimbledon, but happy to see what she can do as underdog in this.
