Caulfield Race Tips

Caulfield is Melbourne’s second most popular racetrack and the home of the Caulfield Cup, the traditional lead up race to the Melbourne Cup.

Caulfield racecourse is operated by the Melbourne Racing Club which has been racing at the location since 1876. Caulfield is affectionately known as ‘the Heath’, from the sandy scrubland that formerly occupied the site.

From a horse racing perspective, Caulfield is one of the outstanding tracks in the country. Races up to 1200m are run out of a chute, with just one bend into the 367 metre straight. It gives every horse their chance.

Races over 1400m and 1600m have a shorter run to the first turn. The early part of these races are also run uphill, so horses drawn wide over these starts are often disadvantaged and leaders can prove hard to run down.

The 1700m, 1800m and 2000m starts give horses a lovely long run into the first bend and every horse gets their chance.

The most famous start at Caulfield is the iconic 2400m of the Caulfield Cup. This begins at the top of the home straight, and the field is often given plenty of encouragement by the crowd before the race!

The winner of the Caulfield Cup is often at the top of the list in Melbourne Cup betting, but the double has only been done eleven times, most recently by Ethereal in 2001.

Other horses to claim the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup double are Poseidon (1906), The Trump (1937), Rivette (1939), Rising Fast (1954), Even Stevens (1962), Galilee (1966), Gurner’s Lane (1982), Let’s Elope (1991), Doriemus (1995) and Might and Power (1997).

Group 1 races run at Caulfield include the Memsie Stakes, Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, Underwood Stakes, Caulfield Guineas, Thousand Guineas, Caulfield Stakes, Toorak Handicap, Caulfield Cup, CF Orr Stakes, Blue Diamond Stakes, Futurity Stakes, and the Oakleigh Plate.
