The way Persian Spirit is going he could be a nice lightweight chance in a race like the Stradbroke and he can keep his winning form intact in this lesser contact. He looked in trouble at the 400m last time at Pakenham but surged late to win well. This isn’t much tougher and his record at Flemington is superb.

Star Vega showed he is back to his best form with a a very good second placing in the Pakenham Cup last start. He is a horse who will relish the 2800m and while his form is mixed over longer trips, when viewed through the prism that he hates wet ground, it makes sense. Shaalute is a big price here but looks like the kind of horse that should appreciate this kind of race, a big field down the straight with lots of speed on. He can rattle off a very quick sectional and if things unfold like I expect for him, he can be right in the finish.
