Festivus comes out of a very strong race last time out at Ballarat where he led and battled on to finish fourth. This is a considerably weaker affair and he looks the goods. John Allen should take him straight to the lead and take a power of running down.

Cotton Eye Joe has been jumping out really well in preparation for this. The ex-Kiwi raced very well in his first prep for Symon Wilde without winning and looks to have come back even better. This is a winnable race.

Bedouin King looks good value here. A jumping prospect, he comes off a last start second on the flat over a mile and has won a hurdle trial since. Getting out to 2000m looks ideal, he should press forward and take a lot of running down.

Stawell 6/11 Astral Knight (4:00pm)
Astral Knight has been a revelation since joining the Simon Ryan stable, running very well at Warrnambool first up then winning with a leg in the air last time at Hamilton. The way he is racing the extra 500m won’t be a problem and he is well weighted here.

Stawell 7/2 Don’t Doubt Dory (4:40pm)
Don’t Doubt Dory just needs some luck from the wide draw but if he gets it, should prove very hard to beat. Last start he was a tragedy beaten when stuck wide without cover for the entire race. Some risk it happens again from the barrier but it’s worth taking at the price.
