There is Group 1 racing in both cities on Saturday with the world’s richest race for two year olds, the Golden Slipper, being the headline act.

Private Harry has been favourite for this ever since he won the Sunlight for three year olds on the Sunshine Coast and with the outstanding form since of Lady of Camelot – and others – the performance only looks better. This is a step up but he is unbeaten in his four career runs and I don’t suggest it starts in this race given the ideal draw and light weight.

Birdman looks a great chance to record his first Australian win jumping back to 2400m. He put the writing on the wall with a fast finishing second over 2000m last time out and importantly he drops 6.5Kg off that. Expect him to get back here but he can run over them late.

Love the way that the VRC Derby winner Goldrush Guru is going this autumn. Even if you acknowledge the Victorian form is a bit below that of up north, his staying prowess indicates that out to 2000m for the first time this prep, he should be ready to peak. Key rivals Swiftfalcon and Broadsiding are unproven at the trip.

Ceolwulf gets back into a winnable race for him after he wasn’t really suited by dropping back 100m into the Canterbury Stakes last time. He still ran well there, and last year’s Epsom and King Charles winner looks set to recapture his best form here, especially from an ideal draw.

Grinzinger Belle was a total forgive run first up after jockey Damian Lane simply went too hard on her over the 1400m. Under the circumstances, she did well to stick on and run fourth. Declan Bates should lead again but at a much more measured tempo, and she will take plenty of catching.

It shapes as one of the most open Slippers in years and I thought that Skyhook looked the value of the back of his brilliant win just seven days ago in the Pago Pago Stakes. The one week back up should really suit him and from barrier eight, he shouldn’t be leading like he was last week, but can get the right run on the speed.

Interestingly for a 1200m Group 1 at the Valley there just isn’t much speed here. That leaves things open for Schwarz to press forward and dominate this race tactically as he did the Australia Stakes back in January. With key rivals Benedetta and Jimmysstar likely to be giving a big start, he can run a bold race in front at big odds.
