Group 1 racing comes from both Melbourne and Sydney with the Australian Guineas being the highlight at Flemington, while the Verry Elleegant – the old Chipping Norton – is the feature at Randwick.
Best Bet
Trainer Bjorn Baker is winning everything in Sydney and he can add an Australian Guineas to his brilliant run of form with the red hot Point And Shoot. His last two wins in Sydney have to be seen to be believed and it looks superior form to the Melbourne contenders. Just needs the breaks to unfold from barrier one to be winning here.

Remarkably Midwest has never been down the straight in his 25 start career but the Freedmans have found a lovely race for him if he brings his best to Flemington. Both runs this time in have been good, he should be at peak fitness third up and maps to get things a little easier than last time at Randwick. The last 100m is the query, but a strong bet in this field.

If Place Du Carrousel can get back to anything like her form out of last autumn – where she was second, beaten just over a length in the Ranvet Stakes behind Via Sistina – she would win the Blamey Stakes for fun with just 53Kg. Her good recent trial at Cranbourne suggests she just might be able to.

It’s a very good edition of the Verry Elleegant Stakes and Ceolwulf looks the value. His record over this track and trip is just outstanding, with brilliant wins in the Epsom and the King Charles at his most recent starts over the Randwick mile. Hopefully Chad Schofield can give him a slightly more aggressive ride here and that can be the key to upsetting Via Sistina.

Reserve Bank looks an exceptional talent and with just four runs under his belt he should still be improving as an autumn three year old. The Price/Kent trained gelding’s best run came here behind First Settler. Barrier 19 should be the right spot by this time of day. Open race but he can win it.

Willaidow is becoming a real favourite of punters and it’s understandable given he has now won his last three straight. The most impressive of those was his first up win in the Southern Cross Stakes and it suggests a horse capable of continuing to go through his grades. Tyler Schiller has the tactical speed to press forward from the wide draw.
