Bold decision by Matt Cumani to kick this gelding off over 1800m, a longer trip than he had ever raced over, first up here 12 days ago but it nearly paid off with a win there and it should hold him in good stead here. He went through his grades in the spring, placing in the Group 3 Carbine Club, and has serious upside as a stayer. The wide draw is the only negative but he gets Damian Lane to offset that.

Pericles is clearly the value in the Futurity Stakes. He was a terrific winner first up last spring in the Tramway at his first start for Bjorn Baker and had a great prep culminating with a second in the Champions Mile. He draws to get the gun run and if there is any chink in the armour of favourite Treasurethe Moment he can take advantage.

Closer To Free was purchased privately before debuting in the Blue Diamond Prelude, a race he won most impressively. He can give his lucky new owners a big thrill here by taking out the big one itself. The midfield draw should suit, with Mick Dee likely to position just off the speed and like he was in the prelude, be strong through the line.

It’s a very weak Oakleigh Plate without a single prior Group 1 winner in the field. That leaves it open to a horse with less conventional form to win it and Don’t Hope Do is one such example. He was very good first up in the Rubiton and gets a 4.5Kg weight swing on Oak Hill for that. The speedy gelding should get a good run on speed.
