Racing Tips – Saturday Best Bets for Cranbourne and Newcastle

Saturday racing heads out of the cities this weekend with Cup Day at Cranbourne, while at Newcastle, The Hunter is the highlight of a good card of racing.

Best Bet

1. Paul's Regret
Cranbourne R5 (3:00pm)

Paul’s Regret can make it back to back wins in the Pendant at Cranbourne. The Peter Chow trained mare is very well in under the set weights and penalties conditions and she is a class act at her best, as shown by her Swan Hill Cup win. There looks good speed drawn around her so Damien Oliver should be able to slot in just behind it, and prove too strong late.

Recommended Price: $4.20
Confidence Level: 4.5/5

More Racing Tips

1. Skyphios
Cranbourne R2 (1:10pm)

Skyphios will enjoy a huge drop in class from his three runs this prep – the Guineas, Vase and Derby. Admittedly he hasn’t troubled the judges in any but this is vastly easier and he is a Flemington winner. Looks a worthy gamble.

Recommended Price: $4.50
Confidence Level: 3/5

1. French Bonnet
Newcastle R3 (1:10pm)

Second up specialist French Bonnet looks primed to win this race. The mare had every chance first up at Rosehill but ran into a couple of very smart ones. She will strip fitter for that effort and has a perfect second up record – three wins from three attempts. Expect her to be very hard to beat here.

Recommended Price: $4.00
Confidence Level: 3.5/5

7. Brayden Star
Cranbourne R6 (3:40pm)

Brayden Star has jumped out brilliantly for his Australian debut and can win here. Suspect the ex-UK galloper has long been set for this race as it offers nice prizemoney for a race of this class and it is being held at his home track. An eight length winner at his last start in the UK, he should prove a class above.

Recommended Price: $3.20
Confidence Level: 4/5

9. Visinari
Cranbourne R7 (4:20pm)

Visinari looks hard to beat in the 2022 Cranbourne Cup. He was just fair when stepping up to weight for age last time in the Crystal Mile at Moonee Valley but back to a handicap where he is just half a kilo over the limit, looks much better suited. The speed here looks genuine and he should be able to slot in just forward of midfield.

Recommended Price: $4.00
Confidence Level: 3.5/5

5. In The Congo
Newcastle R8 (4:40pm)

In The Congo didn’t quite see out the 1500m of the Golden Eagle but dropping back 200m in The Hunter, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained gelding looks primed to win. Last year’s Golden Rose winner draws a good barrier as well, and while there will be some pressure here, he has a high cruising speed and is capable of absorbing it.

Recommended Price: $3.60
Confidence Level: 4/5

12. Jigsaw
Cranbourne R8 (5:00pm)

Jigsaw is first up over 1000m on the back of a some terrific jumpouts. He can lead in his races but with a stack of speed here I expect him to kick up and sit behind the leaders. If the breaks go his way at the right time, he can come from off the pace and storm over the top of them.

Recommended Price: $4.60
Confidence Level: 3.5/5
