Smokin’ Romans looks close to a good thing in the 2022 Caulfield Cup. Simply put, if he maintains the level he has gone to at his last two starts, he is nigh on unbeatable with just 51.5Kg. He draws to get the perfect run, he handles the conditions, and in the past has been even better over these extended trips. In a weak edition of the race, he is the clear top pick.

Cap De Joie produced an enormous performance first up at Sandown when she ran brilliant closing sectionals in defeat. She ran the fastest last 600, 400 and 200 of the day, quite a feat when there were black type races run over similar and shorter distances. She looks a potential star and can handle wet ground.

Cascadian looks a class above his rivals at weight for age. The Godolphin galloper – and how well is that stable going? – was dominant winning the Hill Stakes last time and coming back to 1800m holds no fears at all. He is odds on but deservedly so.

Stockman comes off a terrific run when topweight in the Metropolitan and can claim the St. Leger here at set weights. While he would prefer it wetter, it should be sufficient for him and he is a true stayer who will run the 2600m right out.

Eponymous was enormous last start at Moonee Valley despite having very little luck. He managed to run the fastest last 200m of the entire meeting, quite incredible given that there was a 1000m Group 1 on the same program. The Chris Waller trained gelding looks well placed here and has plenty of upside.

Front Page was the dominant favourite for this race before injury 12 months ago and he can fulfill his destiny by taking out the Kosciuszko. Trainer Geoff Duryea brings him here first up but he tends to produce his best performances fresh and he has been trialling the house down. A replica of his last first up run – an effortless win, in slick time in the Wagga Town Plate – would see him win this.

The world’s best sprinter looks set to make it back to back wins in the world’s richest race on turf. Returning to Sydney after his Royal Ascot triumph, he showed that in the Shorts he is going as well as ever. While he has drawn wide, he has overcome these draws before and Chris Waller will have him peaking on the day.

Bandersnatch is a perennially underrated gelding who put the writing on the wall with a terrific first up run at Sandown behind I Wish I Win and Ayrton. The Hawkes trained gelding flies second up and handles all conditions.
