2025 kicks off with the traditional Flemington meeting, with the Bagot Handicap and the Kensington Stakes the highlights.

The key to Trapeze Warrior’s chances here is that he gets back to 1200m after his last two runs were over 1000m. He just doesn’t have the turn of foot or early speed for those races but back out to this trip I expect him to sit far closer in the run. His last straight run, during Cup week, was terrific.

Dom can kick the year off with a first up win. The gelding showed a stack of ability in his first three career runs, including a brilliant win over this 1400m trip on debut and then runs in town around horses like Cavity Bay and Evaporate who went on to run well in stakes grade. He’s jumped out nicely ahead of this.

Miraval Rose looks nicely placed here third up. The mare has been good in two runs back from a spell but 1400m is likely her optimum trip. She also finds a race without a lot of speed, and she can position further forward here than key rivals The Open and Modown, who Craig Williams jumps off in order to ride this mare.

Interpretation hasn’t been seen since the Melbourne Cup where he finished back of midfield as a $21 chance. It’s been a long time since he has won but if anyone can pull off a training feat like this, it is Ciaron Maher. With 57Kg and an ideal draw, he looks over the odds in an even edition of the Bagot.

Big Me has been a costly conveyance at times but he really should have won last start at Moonee Valley after being held up at a vital stage around the home turn. He gets back to his home track here and with even luck can run over them late.
