Mystery Island shapes as the one to beat in the 2023 Colac Cup. He was an excellent surprise winner first up (beating the favourite Mister Me) and has acquitted himself well in both outings since then. The gelding will relish the trip while the favourite is a risk at the 2000m. Love the booking of John Allen, he should sit back and round them up late.

Monterey looks a big price on debut. The Fastnet Rock filly has shown nice ability in her two jumpouts at Flemington, and she has shown early speed so should be capable of taking up a forward position. Not sure I’ve seen Godolphin bring many to Colac, and in an open race she looks excellent value.

Ex-WA mare Rocky Path was super impressive at her first Victorian start, storming from the back to get up and win in slick time at Camperdown. There was a big margin to third and the second horse has won since at Sandown. Not sure Moonee Valley is her ideal track, but she seems worth the gamble here.

I Miss Margie will benefit from the plethora of scratchings here. Originally in barrier 11, she is now in barrier eight which is more manageable. She has the early speed to come across from that wide draw and she has been in tremendous form of late. If she can get across, she showed at Sale last time out that she is capable of being very strong through the line over this short course.
