There are two jumps races scheduled for Wednesday, the BM120 Steeplechase and the Galleywood Hurdle, known by many as the Cox Plate of jumps racing.
Race 4 – Victory Dunroe BM125 Steeplechase, 3450m
Good edition of this race but for mine Tom Foolery shapes as one of the best bets of the entire carnival. I loved his run behind Budd Fox at Pakenham and he looks a horse who should be ideally suited around this track. Like the market says, Duke of Bedford and Gunaluva are the main dangers.
Strategy: Back Tom Foolery.
Race 6 – Sovereign Resort Galleywood Hurdle, 3200m
A comment for every runner in this year’s Galleywood is below.
Blandford Lad – Just hit the front a bit too soon in the MJ Bourke at Pakenham. Has a great record at this track and trip and sure to be right in the finish again.
Fabalot – Ran second in this race last year. Goes up 4Kg on that but this is a weaker edition. Would have liked to see more from him in the Bourke at Pakenham.
Bedford – SCRATCHED.
El Diez – In career best form and nearly always produces a good run at this track and trip. Place chance.
Out and Dreaming – Ran third in this race two years ago but has clearly battled some injury issues since then. Would have liked to see more out of him in the MJ Bourke but he’s still open to decent improvement. Wary.
Rising Renown – Beat El Diez last time at Ballarat which looks decent form now but I would still be surprised if he won.
Dr Dependable – 1 win from 31 over jumps says it all.
Sky Hero – Nothing in his previous jumping form suggests he can win but he did just pull out a career best run on the flat at his first go for the new stable so I’m certainly not dismissing him altogether.
Pure Deal – Ostensibly disappointing chasing Elementry last time at Warrnambool but that horse might be really good. He was first up there and is certainly open to improvement. Key winning chance.
The Mighty Spar – Big drifter in the MJ Bourke and was a little disappointing in the finish, albeit not beaten far. His Kiwi form isn’t really anything special and Kuru has jumped off to ride Fabalot.
Port Guillaume – Looked a promising type earlier in his career but comes off a poor season last year, although a possible explanation is that he didn’t handle wet ground. Not hopeless.
Chains of Honour – First jumping start in two seasons and while he showed promise at the caper, it’s a big ask to be competitive here. Looks under the odds.
Strategy: Happy to back a couple here at decent odds, Blandford Lad and Pure Deal.
