Perhaps Billy Slater is not the genius he has been pegged as. And perhaps Craig Bellamy really is the shadow coach of the Blues – all indicators from style of play to vision of the coaches box suggests he is. This lends us to widely put the numbers to one side for the second Origin and roll with the Blues.
The team changes for the second game are nothing short of astonishing from the Queensland side. Despite being smashed up front and exposed on the edges thanks to playing a middle on an edge, Corey Horsburgh was overlooked and Reuben Cotter remains on the left edge.
That is just the start of the madness.
Daly Chery-Evans was dumped to start Tom Dearden. Cam Munster was a stunning choice as skipper.
Arguably Queensland’s two best players in Origin I in Jeremiah Nanai and Patrick Carrigan were relegated to the bench. The incredibly average Trent Loiero was promoted to start at lock while Kurt Capewell, who has missed 20 more tackles than any other player this year, starts on an edge. Beau Fermor was dropped after 17 minutes of action where he did little wrong.
Valentine Holmes, Queensland’s worst, somehow got promoted to the centres with Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow pushed to the wing.
It is complete madness and a clear indicator that Slater has lost the plot.
The Blues have made just two forced changes with Mitch Barnett and Mitch Moses out hurt and Stefano Utoikamanu and Jaroe Luai joining the team.
The scoreline in the opener was completely flattering to the Maroons. The Blues missed four shorts at goal and blew numerous opportunities. The stats were damning for the Maroons with NSW winning possession 53-47, losing the metre-race by 328m and missing 49 tackles to 19.
New South Wales have now won three games straight and all thee wins have been by double digits.
The Blues have loved Optus Stadium with NSW winning both games by 32. NSW have won five of the last seven neutral venue matches.
This should be a bounce back spot for the Maroons but they are too far off the Blues to concern them. This has all the hallmarks of a rout.
Same Game Multi
Latrell Mitchell has seven tries in nine Origin appearances, crossing in four of his last five.
Zac Lomax has five tries in four Origin games and as long as he is running against Reuben Cotter and Val Holmes he will get plenty of clear runs.
Value Bet
Since 2007, a forward has won man of the match honours in Game 1 seven times. On six occasions, a forward was awarded the honour in Game 2 after the forward Game 1 win. Isaaah Yeo strikes as the obvious candidate and he is certainly a runner but the value is with Angus Crichton. The Roosters forward was outstanding in the opener with 155m, three tackle breaks and an offload.
