It is surprising to see Tonga not favoured by more when they meet Samoa for the first time in three years.
The respective preparations in this one are key. Tonga spent the week in Tonga getting lauded by their countrymen and getting in touch with their cultural roots. Samoa have been nursing sore bodies from a brutal encounter with New Zealand.
Both teams have named incredibly strong teams but Tonga have a better side. They have significant advantages with their three-quarters, halves, edge and bench while Samoa only really have advantages at fullback and in the middle. Samoa have also lost Jaydn Su’A and Ata Mariota.
These two are 10-10-1 all-time in their head-to-head with Samoa winning the last meeting at the 2022 World Cup 20-18. Tonga have won two of the three matches since 2018.
Tonga also reached the final of last year’s Pacific Champs while Tonga have lost their last six Tests.
Tonga look a great bet.
Same Game Multi
Tolutau Koula was the best centre in the NRL this year and managed 17 tries in 22 appearances.
Daniel Tupou has 12 tries in 21 Tests for Tonga and comes off a season where he scored 19 ties in 24 games.
Eliesa Katoa has been in super tryscoring form with 26 tries in 51 games the last two years.
Value Bet
Addin Fonua-Blake is the best tryscoring prop in Rugby League and is a big value bet to score when Tonga play Samoa. The Sharks prop has crossed for 23 tries in 76 games across the last three seasons, using his footwork and size to get over. Kristian Woolf is a smart coach and will use him well.
