Cronulla have landed a ridiculously easy draw. Canberra were in a similar situation last year and parlayed it into a finals spot despite being a bottom five side. The Sharks are coached well enough and bring back a similar team that finished sixth last year. This is a team that has Top 4 upside. They are winning 13 games, particularly with Nicho Hynes having regained his confidence.

Brisbane went within 20 minutes of winning last year’s Grand Final but no matter how close they came, it is very difficult to run it back. The Broncos carry a heavy emotional toll into this year and recent history has not been kind to losing Grand Finalists. The Broncos have lost four of their best 17. Everything went Brisbane’s way last year – it is unlikely to be similar two years on the trot.

The 2023 Newcastle Knights are a facsimile of the 2009 Parramatta Eels – a bad team that went on a hot run on the back of a mercurial fullback. The Eels finished 10th the following year. The Knights look worse than that. They have four equal halves which mean they have none and they are poorly coached. They’ll be exposed this year.
