The big difference between the Knights and the Titans – the two teams that finished bottom two last year – was that Newcastle deserved to finish last while the Gold Coast were unlucky. Newcastle finished bang on their true win number while the Titans undershot by 2.6 wins. Kalyn Ponga is healthy and Justin Holbrook is a major upgrade at coach but this team has an awful pack and no depth. They look the pick of the favourites.

The Wests Tigers rise will prove temporary with the removal of Shane Richardson as CEO set to send the club into free fall. The Tigers still lack the talent needed to compete and Benji Marshall has done nothing to prove himself a competent coach. The Tigers were incredibly healthy last year so that is a red flag for this season while they have the fourth-most difficult draw. They are absolutely in the spoon mix this year.

The teams that tend to win wooden spoons are not necessarily the teams with the worst roster but teams with bad rosters who undergo organisational upheaval – or in colloquial terms, the backside falls out of the club. Manly is that club. They have a bottom four roster, Anthony Seibold is favourite to be first coach sacked and the team has just appointed a new CEO. This side is one Turbo injury away from being a five-win team.
