The battling 1-4 Sydney Thunder host the defending champion 4-2 Hobart Hurricanes in Sydney on Saturday night.
Head to Head
This looks like a complete mismatch.
The Thunder are stuck at the bottom of the table after losing four of their five matches. Three of those defeats have been heavy losses, going down by nine wickets, 71 runs, and 47 runs. Their closest loss actually came against the Hurricanes on the final ball in the opening match of the season, but these two sides have moved in opposite directions since.
The Hurricanes have navigated a difficult run with injuries to win four of their six matches. While they have cut it fine at times, with three wins going to the final over, their only losses have come against an in-form Melbourne Stars outfit and the Scorchers in Perth, which is always a tough road trip.
The toss should not have much impact here. The team batting first has won five straight matches at ENGIE Stadium, bucking the wider competition trend where 16 of the last 22 games have been won by the chasing side.
The Hurricanes have won five straight against the Thunder and should be far too classy once again.
Best Bet
ENGIE Stadium is typically a much slower surface than we see at most Big Bash venues, so it can pay to back players with a proven record here. McDermott averages 41 against the Thunder and has cleared 25 runs in each of his last two innings at this ground.
Value Bet
As noted, this is a slower deck that suits spin, which will suit their frontline spinner, who has been their leading wicket-taker this season and has finished as Hobart’s top wicket-taker in two of his last three away matches.
