AFL Tips – Sydney v Melbourne – Opening Round 2024

Footy is back for 2024! The season begins in Sydney for the first time ever and the Demons look capable of upsetting the Swans at the SCG.

Best Bet

Melbourne
Win

The Demons have been backed off the map for this game in the last few days and it isn’t hard to see why.

Simon Goodwin’s men allayed many of the concerns about a tumultuous offseason with a thorough dismantling of Carlton. Despite the loss of Angus Brayshaw and the absence of Clayton Oliver, they dominated the highly touted Blues midfield.

Oliver returns for this one and the addition of Christian Salem to the on ball brigade should help add some much needed class and polish.

The Swans midfield on the other hand looks undermanned. New recruit Taylor Adams will miss with injury, as will mainstays Luke Parker and Callum Mills.

As always, the Dees forward line is a question but their backline should once again be one of, if not the best in the league. The Swans have questions to answer in the post Buddy era – Logan McDonald and Joel Amartey looked far from imposing against Brisbane last week.

These sides met twice last year and the Dees were dominant winners in both games, including Round 24 at the SCG, breaking Sydney’s six game winning streak.

There is not much reason to think things will be different in 2024.

Same Game Multi

Demons H2H, Caleb Windsor 1+ Goal, Grundy, Salem, Jordon 20+ Disposals

Totally forget Brodie Grundy’s stats from last year when sharing ruck duties with Max Gawn. He is well capable of accumulating big numbers of disposals when the solo ruck, as he will be now with Sydney.

Christian Salem and James Jordon both shape to take prominent midfield roles with their respective sides.

Caleb Windsor is on debut for the Dees but looks an exciting forward prospect and kicked two goals in the practice match against Carlton.

Value Bet

Caleb Windsor
2+ Goals

Windsor is a long term midfield/wing prospect for the Demons but should be playing forward here, especially with Kozzy Pickett out. A beautiful user of the ball and kick for goal, expect him to get some opportunities here.
