Two of the competition’s most exciting and highest-scoring teams collide at the MCG on Saturday afternoon in what should be a cracking contest.
Best Bet
Hawthorn and Melbourne are two of the highest-scoring teams in the competition and their games reflect it.
Hawthorn rank fourth for points scored, with their games averaging 186 this season. Melbourne sit fifth but lead the competition for game totals at 202.5 points per game. The Hawks’ four MCG games this season have been even more prolific, averaging 194.5. There is simply too much firepower on both sides for this to fall short of the total.
Steven King’s Demons continue to play with scant regard for defence, resulting in free-flowing football in both directions. The Hawks are a better defensive outfit but they have conceded 85+ points in three of their last four games. They also lose full back Tom Barrass this week.
There is some risk of late showers but the current forecast is unlikely to affect conditions for this game. The last five meetings between these teams have gone under, but this is a completely different Melbourne side.
Back this to clear the total comfortably.
Same Game Multi
Melbourne have a vulnerability against small forwards and there is no better small forward in the competition right now than Nick Watson.
Harry Sharp has kicked a goal in nine straight games for the Dees.
Melbourne also leak to inside midfielders, making Jai Newcombe a strong inclusion for a fourth straight 25-disposal game.
Value Bet
Karl Amon has had 30 or more disposals in each of his last three games and Melbourne are a reasonable opponent for half-backs. At $4.00 playing a team who don’t really value defence, the price is hard to ignore.
