St. Kilda are an outstanding bet with the points on Saturday night.

For whatever reason, Ross Lyon’s side do not get the respect they deserve, despite being finalists last year and conceding fewer points than any team, including the much vaunted Dees defence and the Premiers, Collingwood.

Geelong field the second oldest team in Round 1 but the flip side of that is they haven’t had much youth come into the side. Their stars are another year older and their lack of speed is an obvious flaw, as is their over reliance on Patrick Dangerfield through the middle.

The Cats ranked 15th for clearance differential and 11th for contested possession differential last year, so the midfield remains a major question mark. The Saints dominated the Cats in these areas when they met last year, resulting in a 33 point win.

It’s a tougher ask down at the Cattery, but they can get the job done again.

Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera is a beautiful ball user out of the backline and takes the majority of the kick ins for the Saints.

Jack Steele had something of a down year in 2023 but the Saints skipper is class act and should be back to his best off an uninterrupted preseason.

Tanner Bruhn is a promising young midfielder for the Cats who should see lots of extra game time in 2024.
