The ladder tells you both teams are 1-1, but the Dees have been the far more impressive outfit through the first two rounds.

Melbourne were too good for St Kilda in Round 1 before running into a red-hot Fremantle last week. Carlton scraped past Richmond after being hammered by Sydney in the opening round. The quality of opposition and the manner of results paint very different pictures.

Both clubs are trying to play faster, higher-scoring football in 2026, but Melbourne look far more capable of actually executing it. The Dees have the personnel and the structures to make it work. Carlton have the ambition but seemingly not the talent.

Head-to-head history is not a great guide here given how differently these sides now play. Carlton have won the last four meetings, but by a combined margin of just 15 points. These have been coin-flip games, and on current form the Demons look like the better team.

Back Melbourne to have too much run for the Blues.

Jagga Smith’s incredible start to his AFL career shows no sign of slowing down. The Rising Star nominee is averaging 29.5 touches across his first two games and should continue to run amok through the midfield here.

Bayley Fritsch has scored two or more goals in three of his four games against Carlton and Francis Evans has kicked five goals across his two outings this season. Both look well placed to contribute to the scoreboard.

This bet landed for Carlton in the opening round and nearly came off again last week against Richmond. The Blues were a top-six first-half team in 2025 and a bottom-four second-half team, and that trend has continued into 2026. Back them to run out of gas again.
